Harvest Devotional Day 16

Day 16: January 23, 2024

Planting Seeds That Flourish

Passage: Psalm 92:12-14
The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; 13 planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God.
14 They will still bear fruit in old age; they will stay fresh and green.

Ponder: Just an FYI, friend, God loves trees - a lot. So do I, and you may as well. But ours can’t compare to God’s affection for trees. God references trees 293 times, branches 109 times and fruitfulness 212 times in the Bible (NIV translation). Trees in the Bible often represent life, strength, and beauty. Or at times, they represent fruitlessness, decay and even death. Jesus even cursed an unfruitful tree. The palm tree referenced today speaks of uprightness as it grows tall and straight towards heaven and produces a fruit rich in nutrients. The cedar tree is known for its hardiness, longevity and resistant to decay. Both symbolize God’s righteous people.

To be righteous is to be right with God through receiving Christ’s redemptive work on the cross as your own redemption from sin. Because of Christ, you are righteous and spiritually alive in God. Everything that God makes alive is always growing. If a living organism stops growing, it immediately begins to die. Today’s verses indicate that God has a vision of you as righteous, continually growing and producing the fruit of a righteous life. And of particular interest and importance is where you have been planted by God. In His house, or His very presence, and in the courts to His house as display of His righteous goodness to you. Don’t you know that in a king’s castle, all the trees and plants receive the utmost attention and care. They never lack, but always flourish. So, it is with you today. You are flourishing with spiritual life, fruit and power, as God is providing all that you need. Plant seeds today that will flourish through obedience and trust in God, staying planted deep in God’s presence.

Practice: How does today’s verse speak to you about God’s intimate knowledge of you and His care and provision for you?

Pray: Lord, I thank you today, that though you knew no sin, you became sin on my behalf, in order to make me right with you. And I am humbled, yet overjoyed, that you have planted me in your presence and are providing all I need to flourish righteous fruitfulness.
