Planting The Seeds of Faithfulness
Passage: Matthew 25:21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
Ponder: Recently, I purchased a second horse. As I was searching websites and social media, I noticed that most sellers would indicate many of the same traits about their trusted steeds. A common characteristic that many highlighted was that you could leave this particular pony in the pasture for months, come back and toss a saddle on him, and he’ll be the same horse he was the last time you rode him. The idea being that you wouldn’t have to retrain him. Another one a buyer likes to hear is that this pony will come right to you every time. There’s not much more that can steal the joy of horseback riding than first having to run a 5K to catch your ride.
What the sellers are portraying is that this horse is faithful. Faithfulness is a fantastic quality for anyone to possess. Everyone appreciates people who are faithful. No one appreciates liars and undependable people, not even the liars and undependable like them. God, who scripture makes clear is faithful, appreciates, even honors, faithfulness on our part with His blessing. According to today’s verse, God looks for faithfulness on our part as we care over the smallest things. Being loyal, true, unwavering, and reliable is so valuable, that when God fills a person with His Spirit, He equips them to be faithful; faithful to Him and His commands. And faithful as well, to everyone else they interact with in life. Planting the seeds of faithfulness begins with holding steadfast to your beliefs from God’s Word and your obedience to Him, and fulfilling your commitments you’ve made to others.
Practice: Are there any indicators that your faithfulness to God and others is waning? What step will you take to get back to being loyal, true and reliable?
Prayer: Father in Heaven, I thank you for your faithfulness to me. You are same yesterday, today and forever, and you have never failed or forsaken me. I pray, that you will strengthen my soul, that I may be faithful. And Lord, let me hear you say to me one day, “well done good and faithful servant, enter into your Master’s happiness.” AMEN.
