Harvest Devotional Day 15

Day 15: January 22, 2024

Planting Seeds of Maturity

Passage
: You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Ponder: I don’t know if you’re a Facebookie or not, but if you are, have you checked out your profile and seen how many “friends” you have? I just did. Not to brag, but I have 1,202 friends. Actually, that’s not anything to brag about. I haven’t met the majority of them in person or even know anything about them, except what is on their profile pages. And in full disclosure, I rarely read profile pages. Some I knew back in the day, but now years later, I don’t know much about them. I think that you and I can agree that there is a huge difference between Facebook “friends,” and familiar and faithful friends in real life. I, as well as you, do have some true friends. These are people I have a personal relationship with, and that I have some knowledge of. People who genuinely appreciate me and I them. And the more time I spend with them, the more I get a deeper knowledge of them.

The scriptures speak much on the topic of spiritual maturity and growing in relationship with Jesus. Both Apostles Paul and Peter often, in reference to spiritual growth, include growing in the knowledge of Christ Jesus. And both of these men knew Jesus very well. When they speak of knowing Jesus, there is a two-fold idea being conveyed. One being growing intellectually in your understanding of Jesus from the scriptures. Who He is. What He came to do, and why and how He did it. Knowledge that leads to placing your faith in Him for your salvation. The other has to do with knowing Jesus in an intimate way, through personal relationship and experience with Him. The more time you spend with Jesus, locked in, talking with Him, and listening to Him talk to you, the more you become aware of His activity in your life at any given moment of the day. Planting the seeds of growing in knowing Jesus produces a harvest of Christlike character, His manifestations of grace, and a confident faith to trust Him in all things.

Practice: What are your present practices for growing in knowing Jesus more personally? What do you need to plant in this season of your life in order grow to know Jesus more?

Pray: Lord, I know that you are near to me. Yet, I admit that at times, I am not focused on getting to know you more. Please forgive me for neglecting your grace and knowledge. Help me to identify how I can make proper time and opportunity to commune with you and grow in knowing you more intimately. Thank you. AMEN.
