Harvest Devotional Day 5

Day 5: January 12, 2024

Planting the Seeds of Kindness

Passage
: John 6:35-36 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

Ponder: As a small group connecting tool, icebreakers can be a fun way to get to know each other. One such popular icebreaker question is, “If you were a super hero, what would your super power be?” Some responses might be teleporting; the ability to instantly travel to a faraway location in an instant. Others might include to be invisible, time travel or maybe x-ray vision. Now back to reality. Though you and I are not superheroes, we do have a “super power” that can change the world. Kindness.

Kindness is a supernatural product of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling in us. And it has the potential to change any situation, any attitude or any person. Perhaps we are heroes when we humble ourselves to act with kindness to others, especially those who look, think, or act differently than us. And even those who irritate us. Jesus tells us that we are to love and do good to even our enemies, who will certainly not return the favor. In fact, kindness is rare, yet powerful. It’s the nature of Almighty God. And we are no more like our Heavenly Father than when we value, respect and love others. When you choose to love with actions over hate, or bitterness, you are planting the seeds of kindness. And Jesus assures you that will be rewarded in a big way by your loving, kind Heavenly Father.

Practice: What is a practical action step that you will take within the next twenty-four hours to impact someone with kindness?

Pray: Father in Heaven, I praise you for the embodiment of love, compassion, and kindness. It has been your loving kindness that has led me to repentance and into your glorious salvation. I can do nothing less than love others with a right attitude and acts of kindness. Help me to see the need of someone around me today and show me how I could meet that need. AMEN.

Good morning Pastor Mark. I just wanted to let you know there was a little typo on today’s devotional. It’s actually Luke 6, the devotional has it down as John 6. But I read both and they both spoke to me this morning!!
