Day 8: January 15, 2024
Planting the Seeds of Patience
Passage: Ecclesiastes 7:8 The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.
Ponder: Riddle me this. What has eight letters, is something everyone needs, and most want, but are absolutely afraid to ask for? If you said barbecue, you’re wrong, but I really like the way you think. We’re all aware of what happens when we pray for patience, right? Sure enough, the whole day will be one be big boiling cauldron of frustration, obnoxious people, long lines and
one short fuse. Actually, these things are part of most every day. But being focused on wanting more patience, we tend to be more acutely aware of the people and the problems that push our buttons.
The dictionary defines patience as possessing the capacity to tolerate delays, trouble or suffering without getting upset. Patience is not natural to human nature; just look at any newborn infant. What do they want? To be warm and fed. When do they want it? NOW! And truthfully, we don’t get much better at it as we age. But God in His Word has much to say about patience, and even elevates it to a product of the Holy Spirit’s activity in our lives. Today’s verse expresses the value of being patient and trusting God and His process. Pride will abandon God’s process and create more problems. But the seeds for patience are trusting in and waiting on God until the conclusion of His process. Trust and wait, the end will be better than the beginning.
Practice: How well is the fruit of patience developing in you right now? How will you plant the seeds of trusting and waiting?
Pray: Lord, I thank you that you are transforming me from the inside by your Spirit’s work in me. I need your fruit of patience. Please give the strength and courage to trust you and to wait on you as you work your purposes for me to their conclusion. AMEN.
