Harvest Devotional Day 14

Day 14: January 21, 2024

Planting Yet More Seed of Faith

Passage: 1 John 5:4-5
For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Ponder: Have you ever possessed something of rarity or value and never knew what you had? I have. A few years ago, I attended a meeting hosted by a Messianic Jewish ministry, and received a plastic bag containing various brochures. Returning to my office, I put the bag in the corner of my study, fully intending to go through it at another time. That time ended up being over a year later. As I dumped the contents onto my desk, along with the brochures, a small velvet bag landed with a thud. I opened it up to find what looked like a rock and small piece of paper. Turns out, it’s a shard of pottery, excavated underneath the Temple mount in Jerusalem. These pieces were discovered in a layer of ground that dated anywhere as recent as Herod’s temple of Jesus’ day, or as far back as Solomon’s Temple. That’s right, I had a biblical artifact that is at least 2,000 to possibly 3,000 years old, stuffed away in a corner. I didn’t know what I had. And yes, I have since moved it to a more prominent place in my office.

You yourself may very well possess something valuable and powerful, and not even know what you have. John reiterates that if you are born again, you are an overcomer. You may not feel like one right now, or at various seasons of life, but you already are an overcomer. Yet, how often do you and I pray prayers for God to give us a victory or a breakthrough in a certain situation? John seems to be telling us that we already possess our breakthrough and victory over this world, its sin, destruction, and its wickedness influence. What you possess is your faith in Christ. And you know you have faith, because you acted with faith when you were born again. Because your faith is in Christ Jesus, you have already overcome the world, because He has overcome it. Plant the seeds of faith today by accepting your victory over what is coming against you. In Christ, you are more than a conqueror today.

Practice: How will you exhibit the faith of an overcomer today?

Pray: Lord, I believe you are the Son of God and have overcome the world. I also believe that because I am born again by your very Spirit, I am also an overcomer. I choose today to stand in the faith you have given and face any opposition of the world system with your authority and power. Thank you for the victory. AMEN.
