Day 4: January 11, 2024
Planting the Seeds of Peace
Passage: John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
Ponder: In our day, it seems there’s a knockoff version of just about everything. From watches and purses, to electronics and apparel. Footwear is the number one counterfeited product sold in the United States. Manufacturers lose billions of dollars annually due to the volume of knockoff items on the market. Of course, buyers save money paying far below market prices. But you have to factor in how that $35 “Rolex” stops ticking after the third time you wear it. Don’t ask me how I know.
Perhaps the most sought-after knockoff today is peace. Everybody needs it, and wants it. There are a vast array of people, places and products offering it. As soon as you buy into one of these counterfeit promises of peace, the hands quickly fall off, and you’re left anxious and disturbed in your soul all over again. And so, you keep lurking around for something else that might give you genuine inner peace. All the while, Jesus offers the real deal. As the Prince of Peace, He has all you need and more when it comes to contentment, assurance, and hope. The seed for reaping a harvest of peace is personal intimacy with Jesus. Make sure amid all the noise offering you peace, that you find yourself in Jesus’ presence with worship and His Word regularly.
Practice: In what ways, at some point in your life, have you sought peace outside of Christ? What was the result? How are you finding peace in Christ today?
Pray: Lord, over my lifetime I have been guilty of seeking peace in what I soon learned were counterfeit options. I thank you that you have given me true and sustaining peace. I have never known your provision of peace to leave me looking further. Lord, though I still experience moments of fear, worry or doubt, I know that I can always look to you for my peace. Please keep my heart at peace today. AMEN.
