Scripture:
Philippians 3:9 (NIV)
“…not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.”
Reflection:
It’s tempting to believe that if we just do enough good—if we serve more, pray harder, or avoid certain sins—then God will be pleased with us. This is the subtle trap of works-based religion. Yet, Paul, who once had an impeccable religious résumé, realized that all his efforts were “rubbish” compared to what Christ freely offers. The sermon emphasized that “righteousness was a gift that Jesus had purchased and now gives freely to those who will believe.” This is the radical grace of the gospel: God’s acceptance is not a wage for our labor, but a gift for our faith.
Reflect today on whether you are still trying to earn God’s love or if you truly rest in Christ’s finished work. When we understand that we are accepted, forgiven, and beloved because of Jesus—right now, as we are—it brings freedom from fear and striving. This is the foundation of true spiritual growth: not performing for approval, but living in response to a love we could never earn.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for giving me the gift of righteousness. Help me to rest in Your finished work rather than striving to earn Your approval. Set me free from guilt and fear, and let me rejoice in the assurance of Your love. Amen.
Action:
Take time today to write down any areas where you feel you must “earn” God’s acceptance. Surrender these to Jesus in prayer, and thank Him for His gift of righteousness.
