Scripture:
Philippians 2:5–7 (NIV)
“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”
Reflection:
When I pause to consider the humility of Jesus, I realize it runs deeper than outward actions. The Son of God did not cling to His divine privileges, but willingly set them aside to draw near to humanity. This humility was not forced upon Him; it was chosen. It is an act of self-emptying (kenosis) that defies the world’s ideas of greatness and power. In Christ’s willingness to become human, I see a God who truly understands my weakness, my pain, and my limitations. His humility invites me to lay down my pride, my insistence on recognition, and my desire to be first.
But it’s more than imitation—it’s transformation. Jesus not only shows me what humility looks like; by His Spirit, He enables me to live differently. When I struggle to serve or forgive, I can remember that my King did not serve from a place of lack or insecurity, but from fullness and love. The closer I draw to Him, the more my own heart is shaped by His.
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for humbling Yourself for my sake. Shape my heart to be like Yours—willing to serve, quick to forgive, and eager to love. Help me to see where pride has a hold on me and give me the grace to lay it down.
Action:
Find a way to serve someone today in secret, expecting nothing in return. As you do, meditate on Jesus’ humility and ask Him to deepen that same spirit in you.
