Staying Close in Suffering

Scripture:
Philippians 3:10 -
"That I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death."

 Reflection:
Paul's statement is startling: he wanted to know not only the power of Christ's resurrection but also the fellowship of His sufferings. Most of us want the power without the pain. We want resurrection life without the cross. We want God to bless us, but we don't want to suffer. Yet Paul understood something profound: staying close to Jesus in times of suffering brings a depth of intimacy with Him that prosperity never could.
Suffering has a way of stripping away everything superficial and revealing what's truly foundational in our lives. It's in the valley, not on the mountaintop, that we discover whether our faith is real or just religious performance. It's in the dark seasons that we learn to lean fully on Jesus rather than our own resources. It's when everything else is shaken that we discover Christ is the unshakable foundation. The question isn't whether you'll face suffering—you will. The question is whether you'll stay close to Jesus when you do, or whether you'll distance yourself from Him in your pain.

 Prayer:

Lord Jesus, I confess that I often want Your blessings without any suffering. I want the mountaintop experiences without the valley journeys. But You've shown me that knowing You more deeply sometimes requires walking through difficult seasons. Help me stay close to You when life is hard. Don't let pain drive me away from You—let it drive me deeper into Your presence. When I face suffering, help me see it as an opportunity to know You in ways I couldn't otherwise. Give me the grace not just to endure, but to find You faithful in the midst of difficulty. Teach me that Your presence in my suffering is more valuable than a life of ease without You. In Your name, Amen.

 Action:
Reflect on a past season of suffering or difficulty in your life. How did you respond to God during that time? Did you draw closer to Him or pull away? What did that season teach you about God's faithfulness? Now, if you're currently in a difficult season, choose one specific way you will intentionally stay close to Jesus today—whether through prayer, worship, reading Scripture, or reaching out to Christian community. If you're not currently suffering, identify someone you know who is, and reach out to encourage them and remind them of God's faithfulness in hard times. Share how God met you in your own season of difficulty.
