Scripture:
Luke 9:23-24 -
"And he said to all, 'If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.'"
Reflection:
The path to knowing the power of Christ's resurrection requires something uncomfortable: dying to ourselves. Jesus doesn't call us simply to believe in Him—He calls us to take up a cross. That means daily crucifying our selfish desires, fleshly attitudes, spiritual laziness, and comfortable complacency. It means surrendering control of our career decisions, relationships, finances, and plans to His lordship.
Here's the beautiful paradox: the more we die to ourselves, the more we come alive in Christ. The more weight we throw off—entangling sins, worldly pursuits, self-centered ambitions—the more freely we can run this race and experience the fullness of Christ's life in us. What are you clinging to that needs to die? What areas of your life are you still controlling instead of surrendering to Jesus?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You call me to take up my cross and follow You. I confess there are areas of my life I'm still holding back from You—plans I want to control, sins I'm not ready to release, comforts I don't want to sacrifice. Give me the courage to surrender everything to Your lordship. Show me specifically what needs to die in my life so that Your resurrection power can flow more freely. Help me trust that dying to myself is actually the path to true life. Amen.
Action:
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal one specific thing He wants you to surrender today. It might be an attitude, a habit, a relationship, a plan, or a comfort zone. Write it down, then pray a prayer of surrender, symbolically "laying it at the cross." Share this commitment with one trusted Christian friend who can encourage you and hold you accountable in this area.
