Scripture:
John 15:4-5 (ESV)
"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."
Reflection:
You will never fulfill God's assignment for your life by working harder or trying more. You'll fulfill it by abiding—by staying connected to Jesus. David didn't discover his purpose to become king by striving for position. He discovered it while spending time in God's presence as a shepherd boy in the wilderness, worshiping and seeking God's face. The more time you spend with Jesus, the more clearly you'll hear His voice directing your steps. If your time with Jesus is limited to Sunday mornings, you'll struggle to discern His purpose. But if you intentionally dwell in His presence—through prayer, Scripture, worship, and listening—He will reveal what He's called you to do. Apart from Him, you can do nothing of eternal value. Connected to Him, you'll bear fruit that lasts forever.
Prayer:
Jesus, I confess that I've tried to discover my purpose through my own effort and planning. I've scheduled and strategized, but often left You out of the equation. Teach me what it means to truly abide in You—not just to have a quick quiet time, but to live in constant awareness of Your presence. Help me create space in my life to hear Your voice. I want to bear fruit that lasts, and I know that only happens when I remain connected to You, the true vine. Amen.
Action:
Evaluate your current rhythm of abiding. How much time do you spend in God's presence each day? This week, increase that time by just 10 minutes—not as a religious obligation, but as a conversation with the One who created you and knows your assignment. Use that time to ask Him: "Lord, what do You want me to know about my purpose today?" Then sit quietly and listen.
