Created for Good Works

Scripture:
Ephesians 2:10-13
"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called 'uncircumcised' by those who call themselves 'the circumcision' (which is done in the body by human hands)— remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ."

 Reflection:

This passage contains one of the most beautiful truths in all of Scripture: "We are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
Let that sink in. You are God's masterpiece. The word "handiwork" is the Greek word poiema - from which we get our word "poem." You are God's poem, His work of art, His masterpiece. And you weren't created randomly or accidentally. You were created with purpose - to do good works that God prepared in advance specifically for you.
The sermon emphasized this when unpacking 2 Timothy 3:17 - God's Word equips us "so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." God is preparing you through His Word for assignments He's already planned for you.
But notice the context Paul gives. He reminds the Ephesians of what they were before Christ: separate, excluded, foreigners, without hope, without God. But now - because of Christ's blood - they've been brought near. They've been transformed from outsiders to insiders, from hopeless to purposeful, from lost to found.
That transformation isn't just about your eternal destination. It's about your present purpose. You were saved FROM something (sin, death, separation from God) and saved FOR something (good works prepared in advance).
God's Word is the tool He uses to prepare you for those works. Every time you read it, reflect on it, and respond to it, you're being equipped. You're being shaped. You're being prepared for the next assignment.
Personalize It:  Put your name in this passage:
[YOUR NAME] is God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for [YOUR NAME] to do. [YOUR NAME], remember that formerly you were separate from Christ, without hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus, [YOUR NAME], who once was far away, has been brought near by the blood of Christ."
Now read it as a declaration over your life:
"I, [YOUR NAME], am God's masterpiece. I am His work of art. I was created in Christ Jesus with purpose - to do good works that God prepared in advance specifically for me. I was once far away, without hope, without God. But now, because of Christ's blood, I have been brought near. I am no longer an outsider. I am God's beloved child, equipped and prepared for the assignments He has for me."

 Prayer:

Father, thank You that I am Your handiwork, Your masterpiece. Thank You that my life has purpose - that You created me to do good works You've already prepared for me. Help me see myself the way You see me - not as an accident, not as a mistake, not as purposeless, but as Your intentional creation with specific assignments ahead. Thank You for bringing me near through Christ's blood. I was once far away, but now I belong to You. As I read Your Word, continue to equip me for the good works You have planned. Show me what they are. Prepare me to walk in them. And give me the courage to step into them when the time comes. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Action:

  1. Reflect on your identity: Write down three ways you are God's "handiwork" - unique qualities, gifts, experiences, or passions He's given you.
  2. Remember your transformation: Write a brief testimony of your "before and after" - what you were like before Christ (or before a significant season of growth) and what God has done in you since.
  3. Identify your good works: Ask God, "What good works have You prepared in advance for me?" Write down what comes to mind - both current assignments and future possibilities.
  4. Connect Word to works: For each good work you identified, ask, "What does God's Word need to teach me, convict me of, correct in me, or train me in to be ready for this?" Find one Scripture passage for each and commit to studying it this week.
  5. Take one step: Choose one good work and take one concrete action toward it today. Don't wait until you feel "fully equipped" - start where you are and let God equip you along the way.
