Becoming a Student, Not Just a Spectator

   Scripture:
Exodus 33:7-11; Psalm 27:4
"Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the 'tent of meeting.' Anyone inquiring of the Lord would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp... The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend... One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple."

  Reflection:
The sermon painted a vivid picture: "Moses would go into a tent for no other reason than to meet with God. And the people who saw the deeds of God didn't go in the tent to pray. It says there in the book of Exodus, they stood and watched Moses. They would all stand outside their tents and watch Moses go to the meeting place. They saw the works. Moses was headed in to discover this God and his ways."
What a convicting image! The Israelites were content to be spectators, watching someone else pursue God. They saw the miracles, enjoyed the blessings, but never developed intimacy with the God behind them. Moses, on the other hand, wasn't satisfied with secondhand encounters. He wanted to know God personally, deeply, intimately.
Which are you? Do you watch others worship while you stand at a distance? Do you rely on Sunday sermons to feed you while your personal Bible sits unopened? Do you see God's works in your life but never pursue knowing His ways? You don't need a special tent. You have something better - God's complete written revelation and the Holy Spirit dwelling within you. The question is: will you go in and meet with Him?

Prayer:
Lord, I confess that too often I've been a spectator rather than a student of Your Word. I've been content to watch others pursue You while I stand at a distance. I've enjoyed Your blessings without pursuing Your presence. Forgive me. Give me Moses' heart - a hunger to know You face to face, to understand Your ways, not just witness Your works. I don't want to just hear about You from others; I want to encounter You myself through Your Word. Draw me into deeper intimacy with You. Amen.

Action:
Create your own "tent of meeting" - a specific place in your home dedicated to meeting with God through His Word and prayer. It doesn't have to be elaborate; it could be a chair by a window, a corner of your bedroom, or your back porch. Make it a place where you consistently go for no other reason than to meet with God. This week, go to that place daily for at least 15 minutes. Bring only your Bible, a journal, and a heart that says, "I want to know You, Lord." Start by reading Exodus 33:12-23 and asking God to reveal Himself to you as He did to Moses.
