When Everything Burns, What Remains?

Scripture:
1 Corinthians 3:12-15
"If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person's work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames."

Reflection:

The pastor painted a sobering picture: arriving in heaven with everything you built in life going through fire. What's made of wood, hay, and stubble—the insignificant, the self-serving, the worldly pursuits—burns up instantly. What remains? Only what was built with gold, silver, and precious stones—the things done in obedience to God, for His purposes, according to His Word.
Here's the challenging question: How much of your life right now would survive that fire?
This isn't about earning salvation—that's secured by Jesus' blood alone. This is about the quality of your Christian life. It's about whether you're building something eternal or just rearranging temporary things. It's about investing in what matters to God or chasing what impresses people.
And here's the connection to this week's theme: You can't build with gold, silver, and precious stones if you don't know what God values. You discover that in His Word. Scripture shows you what's eternal and what's temporary. It reveals what God rewards and what He overlooks. It teaches you how to invest your time, talents, and resources in ways that outlast this life.
Every time you open your Bible, you're getting the blueprint for building something fireproof. Every time you obey what you read, you're laying another stone that will last forever. Every time you align your life with Scripture instead of culture, you're choosing gold over straw.
Imagine standing before Jesus and hearing Him say, "Well done, good and faithful servant. You opened My Word. You believed it. You lived it. And look what we built together—it's all still here, untouched by the flames."
Or imagine the alternative: "If only you had opened it. If only you had read it, reflected on it, responded to it. I had so much more planned for you."
The choice is yours. Every single day, you're building something. The question is: what materials are you using?

Prayer:

Father, I don't want to waste my life on things that won't survive the fire. Show me what truly matters. Reveal where I'm building with wood, hay, and stubble—chasing approval, comfort, or success that means nothing in eternity. Teach me through Your Word how to build with gold, silver, and precious stones. I want to invest in what lasts: Your kingdom, Your purposes, transformed lives, eternal truth. When I stand before You, let there be much that remains. Not for my glory, but for Yours. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Action:

Take inventory of how you spent your time this past week. Write down your major activities and commitments. Now, honestly assess: which of these are "gold, silver, and precious stones" (eternal value) and which are "wood, hay, and stubble" (temporary, self-focused)? Don't condemn yourself—we all need rest, recreation, and practical responsibilities. But ask God to show you one area where you could shift from temporary to eternal focus. Maybe it's replacing some social media scrolling with Bible reading. Maybe it's using your lunch break once a week to encourage someone. Maybe it's saying no to one good thing so you can say yes to one God thing. Make one specific change this week that builds something fireproof.
