Scripture:
Jeremiah 17:9-10
"The human heart is most deceitful of all things and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives."
Reflection:
This is one of the most sobering truths in all of Scripture: our hearts are so deceitful that we don't even know how wicked they are. Before Christ, many of us didn't think we were "that bad." We justified our choices. We compared ourselves to others. We convinced ourselves we were basically good people just trying to make it through life.
But God's Word cuts through our self-deception. It reveals that apart from Christ, we are broken, lost, and headed for destruction. Proverbs 14:12 says, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but it ends in destruction." Our hearts will lead us astray every time if we trust them more than we trust God's Word.
This is why Scripture is so relevant—it exposes what we cannot see on our own. It's a mirror that shows us our true condition. And then, praise God, it points us to the remedy: Jesus Christ, who transforms our hearts and writes His law upon them.
Prayer:
Lord, I confess that my heart is deceitful. I don't always see my own sin clearly. I justify, rationalize, and excuse my behavior. Search my heart, O God. Reveal to me the hidden motives, the secret sins, the areas where I've been deceiving myself. And then, by Your grace, transform me. Give me a new heart that loves what You love and hates what You hate. Amen.
Action:
Spend 10 minutes in honest self-examination today. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal one area where you've been deceiving yourself—perhaps a sin you've minimized, a relationship you've justified, or a compromise you've rationalized. Confess it to God and ask Him to renew your heart in that area.
