Scripture:
John 5:39-40
"You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life."
Reflection:
Jesus rebuked the religious scholars of His day with these stunning words: You know the Bible inside and out, but you don't know Me. They had memorized entire books of Scripture. They were experts in theology. But they missed the whole point—the Bible is about Jesus.
From Genesis to Revelation, there's one scarlet thread: God's redemption of humanity through Christ. In Genesis, we see paradise lost and a promise of an offspring who would crush the serpent. In Exodus, the Passover lamb points to Jesus, the Lamb of God. In Leviticus, the sacrificial system foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice. In Psalms, we see the suffering Messiah. In Isaiah, the suffering servant. In the Gospels, the Messiah arrives, dies, and rises. In the Epistles, we learn what it means to follow Him. In Revelation, the King returns and paradise is regained.
It's possible to study the Bible and miss Jesus. It's possible to know theology but not know the God of theology. The Scriptures are relevant because they reveal the living Christ—and He is still relevant today.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, open my eyes to see You in every page of Scripture. Don't let me become so focused on rules, doctrines, or religious knowledge that I miss You—the living Word. Help me to read the Bible not just to gain information, but to encounter You personally. Let Your Word dwell richly in me because You dwell in me. Amen.
Action:
As you read your Bible this week, ask yourself: "Where is Jesus in this passage?" Whether you're in the Old Testament or New, look for how the text points to Christ—His character, His work, His promises, or His presence. Journal one insight about Jesus from your reading.
