The Danger of a Moved Measuring Stick

 Scripture:
Proverbs 22:28
"Do not move an ancient boundary stone set up by your ancestors."

 Reflection:

In ancient Israel, boundary stones marked property lines—they were sacred markers that protected people's inheritance. Moving them was considered theft and deception. God's warning was clear: don't mess with the established boundaries.
The same principle applies to God's Word. Throughout church history, faithful believers have established "boundary stones" of orthodox Christian theology based on Scripture. These aren't arbitrary rules—they're protective markers showing us where truth lies and where deception begins.
When we hear terms like "progressive Christianity" or "evolving theology," we should ask: Are we discovering new truth, or are we moving ancient boundary stones? Are we finding fresh insights from Scripture, or are we accommodating cultural pressure by redefining what God clearly said?
The measuring stick isn't ours to move. God set it in place. Our job is to align our lives with it, not adjust it to fit our preferences or cultural trends. When we move God's boundary stones, we don't just risk losing our way—we risk losing our inheritance, our identity, and our witness to a watching world.

 Prayer:
Lord, forgive me for the times I've been tempted to move Your boundary stones to make room for cultural acceptance or personal convenience. Give me reverence for Your ancient paths and the courage to stand on orthodox, biblical truth even when it's unpopular. Help me to recognize when teachers, leaders, or movements are shifting the boundaries You've established. Make me a guardian of Your truth, protecting it for the next generation. Let me never sacrifice eternal truth for temporary comfort. In Jesus' name, Amen.

 Action:

Research one core doctrine of the Christian faith that's being challenged in our culture today (examples: the nature of marriage, the exclusivity of Christ for salvation, the sanctity of life, biblical sexuality, or the authority of Scripture). Find what the historic church has believed based on Scripture, and compare it to what progressive voices are saying today. Write down the differences and recommit yourself to the biblical position, regardless of cultural pressure.
