Well-Intentioned but Inadequate

Scripture:
Isaiah 29:13 (quoted by Jesus)
"The Lord says: 'These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.'"

Reflection:

The Palm Sunday crowd had good intentions. They waved palm branches, shouted praises, and declared Jesus as King. But their worship was inadequate because it was based on what they wanted Jesus to be, not who He actually was. By Friday, their "Hosanna!" became "Crucify Him!" Their hearts were never truly surrendered. This is a sobering warning for us. We can go to church, sing the songs, say the right words, and still have hearts far from Jesus. We can use Jesus for what He provides—comfort, blessings, answered prayers—without truly worshiping Him as Lord. If our devotion depends on Jesus meeting our expectations, we're not worshiping Him; we're using Him. True worship costs us something. It requires surrender, not just celebration. It means following Jesus even when He leads us to places we don't want to go—like the cross.

Prayer:

Father, search my heart. Reveal any areas where I've been going through the motions without true surrender. Show me where I've been using Jesus instead of worshiping Him. I don't want to be like the crowd who praised You on Sunday and abandoned You by Friday. Draw my heart close to Yours. Make my worship genuine and my devotion complete. Amen.

Action:

Ask yourself honestly: "If Jesus never does another thing for me, is He still my King?" Journal your answer. If you discover conditional areas in your faith, confess them to God and ask Him to transform your heart from using Him to truly worshiping Him.
