Scripture:
"All that open the womb are mine, all your male livestock, the firstborn of cow and sheep. The firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem. And none shall appear before me empty-handed." (Exodus 34:19-20 ESV)
"I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe," says the LORD Almighty." (Malachi 3:11 NIV)
Reflection:
The principle of redemption runs throughout Scripture. In the Old Testament, when the firstborn was given to God, it redeemed everything else that followed. The first sanctified the rest. This same principle applies to our finances today. When we give God the first 10% of our increase, we redeem the remaining 90%. We place it under God's blessing and protection. Without the tithe, the remaining 90% remains under a curse—vulnerable to unexpected expenses, poor decisions, and the anxiety that comes from self-reliance. But when we honor God with the firstfruits, He promises to protect what remains. He'll prevent the "pests" that devour our resources—the car that breaks down, the appliance that fails, the financial emergencies that seem to come out of nowhere. This isn't a guarantee of a problem-free life, but it is a promise of God's supernatural provision and protection over those who honor Him first. The 90% given with God's blessing goes further than 100% managed in our own strength.
Prayer:
Lord, I want the 90% I keep to be blessed and redeemed by the 10% I give to You. Protect my finances from the "pests" that devour resources—poor decisions, unexpected crises, and the anxiety of self-reliance. Help me to trust that what remains after I tithe will be more than enough because it carries Your blessing. Teach me that obedience to Your principles brings protection and provision that I could never achieve on my own. Amen.
Action:
Reflect on the past year: Have there been unexpected financial setbacks or "pests" that devoured your resources? Consider whether these might be connected to not honoring God with the firstfruits. If you've been tithing faithfully, take time to thank God for the ways He has protected and provided, even in ways you might not have noticed. Write down specific instances where God has stretched your resources or protected you from financial disaster. If you haven't been tithing, make today the day you begin—trusting that God will redeem and bless what remains. Set up your tithe for this week or month right now, giving God the first portion before anything else is spent.
