God's Ownership, Our Stewardship

 Scripture:
"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1 ESV)

"The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein." (Psalm 24:1 ESV)

"What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?" (1 Corinthians 4:7 ESV)

 Reflection:
Before we can understand why God asks for the tithe, we must understand a fundamental truth: we own nothing. God created everything, sustains everything, and owns everything. Every dollar in your bank account, every possession in your home, every breath in your lungs—it all belongs to Him. We're not owners; we're stewards, managers of what belongs to God. This perspective changes everything about how we view giving. When God asks for 10%, He's not taking what's ours—He's asking us to return a portion of what's already His. He's testing whether we recognize His ownership and our stewardship. The real question isn't "Can I afford to tithe?" but rather "Can I afford not to acknowledge God's ownership of everything I have?" When we grasp that we possess things only because He permits it, tithing becomes not a burden but a joyful acknowledgment of His generosity and lordship.

 Prayer:
Father, forgive me for living as though I own what You've merely entrusted to me. Help me to see myself as a steward, not an owner. Everything I have—my income, my possessions, my abilities—comes from Your hand. Teach me to hold loosely what belongs to You and to manage it faithfully for Your glory. Thank You for trusting me with resources to steward. May I be found faithful in returning to You what is already Yours. Amen.

 Action:
Make a list of your major possessions and sources of income. Next to each item, write "God's" to remind yourself of His ownership. Then ask yourself: "Am I managing this as a faithful steward or as a possessive owner?" Choose one area where you've been acting as an owner rather than a steward and surrender it fully to God's lordship today. This might mean adjusting how you use it, being more generous with it, or simply changing your attitude toward it.
