The Heart of the Matter

   Scripture:
"You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former." (Matthew 23:23 NIV)

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:21 ESV)

  Reflection:

Jesus' words to the Pharisees reveal the balance we need: practice justice, mercy, and faithfulness—the heart issues—without neglecting the tithe. The tithe isn't a substitute for a transformed heart, but it's also not optional for those who claim God as Lord. Our giving reveals our heart. When we hold tightly to our money, we reveal that we trust it more than God. When we give generously and first, we demonstrate that God truly is our provider and priority. This isn't about legalism or earning God's love. It's about alignment—bringing our financial practices in line withour confession that God is Lord. The question isn't "Do I have to tithe?" but rather "Does my giving reflect that God is truly first in my life?" Money wars for the throne of our hearts more than any other earthly element. What we do with our finances reveals who really sits on that throne.

  Prayer:

Lord Jesus, search my heart and reveal where money has taken a place that belongs only to You. I don't want to be like the Pharisees, practicing religious duties while neglecting the transformation You desire in my heart. Help me to give not out of obligation but out of love and worship. May my treasure be invested in Your kingdom, so that my heart remains fully Yours. Give me the courage to practice first things—both in my finances and in every area of my life. Amen.

  Action:

Conduct an honest heart check: Look at your bank statements and credit card bills from the past month. What do your spending patterns reveal about your priorities? Where is your treasure actually going? Compare the percentage you give to God with the percentages you spend on entertainment, dining out, or other discretionary items. Ask God to show you if there's a disconnect between what you say you believe and how you actually live. Then take one concrete step this week to realign your finances with God's lordship—whether that's setting up automatic tithing, cutting back on an expense that's taken priority over giving, or simply having an honest conversation with God about your fears around money.
