Day 16: January 24, 2023
THE EYES HAVE IT
LET’S READ
Proverbs 22:9 “Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.”
LET’S CONSIDER
It is no secret, I love horses. There is so much about horses that fascinate me, from size, power, and temperament to name a few. One of the most fascinating things is their eyes. Large and dark, they tell a lot about the horse, yet add to the mystery that is the horse. Each eye works independently of the other, allowing a viewing radius of about 350 degrees. It’s said “they have half an eye on everything at once.” Without focusing on one object, they see many things at once, as a means of staying aware of their surroundings. As well, they express love, fear, reluctance, contentment and other emotions through their magnificent eyes.
With this in mind, today’s verse is equally fascinating to me. A “bountiful eye” brings blessings. Catch that, the eyes have it- the blessings of God. A bountiful eye is to have a perspective of generosity. It is to perceive the needs all around and have a good, moral heart to respond with generosity. It means that my eyes are not solely focused on me, but rather, I have a heart for the care and well-being of others. Seeing opportunities around me, I respond to help meet the need. With that heart of generosity, and eyes of awareness and obedience to act, God’s overflow of blessing pours out over my life. Indeed, the eyes do have it. Do you have the “bountiful eye”?
LET’S ACT
How well do you feel you are at perceiving the opportunities to be generous that are around on any given day? What will you do?
LET’S PRAY
Lord, I thank you that you have blessed me beyond measure. Please forgive me for sometimes I have my eyes more on myself and not the opportunities to share your blessings with others. Give me a bountiful eye, and a spirit of generosity to help meet others needs as an expression of your love and care for them. Amen.
