Day 15: January 23, 2023
WHEN TOYS DON’T BREAK
LET’S READ
Proverbs 10:22 The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.
LET’S CONSIDER
When I was a teenager growing up in Southern California, and looking back now, it seems like that was the land of toys. Not Lincoln Logs or Hot Wheels, but real toys. With mountains on one side, and the Pacific Ocean on the other, the opportunities for play were limitless. Big jacked up trucks and ATVs, dirt bikes, skis, and snowmobiles for the mountains. Jet skis, jet boats, and surfboards for the ocean. And souped-up classic hot rods and expensive sports cars for the roads in between. In fact, I still remember a bumper sticker that resonated the culture of SoCal in the seventies. It read, “He Who Dies With The Most Toys Wins.” I since have grown to know that’s not accurate.
The fact of the matter is, every toy breaks at some point. And we all know the headaches that creates. The more toys we acquire, the more headaches we endure. Today’s verse points out that there is a difference in the pursuit of what I want in life and what God wants to bless my life with. When I trust God for my provision and sustenance in life, He generously provides. And when it comes from His hand, it’s doesn’t create undue stress for me. I am not worn out in the pursuit or the upkeep of something that is a burden. When I experience the richness of His provision, though somethings I possess may break, nothing I possess breaks me.
LET’S ACT
In what ways can you identify the Lord’s gracious provision for your life? Are there things you may presently pursue that God may not have intended for you? If so, what will you do to stop and just trust Him?
LET’S PRAY
Lord, I thank you that you bless my life richly, and that you don’t burden me down with sorrows. Help me to understand what it is to be content in your care for my life and to guard against selfish and vain pursuits that will only weigh me down. Amen.
